It was an unpopular move for Ken Jennings.
“Danger!” Viewers were not happy with the 50-year-old host during a recent episode.
Madison Heights, Mich. K tax analyst, Paul Clauson, returns to the game hoping to increase his one-day earnings of $15,201.
He went up against Jonelle Lonergan, a product manager from Boston, Mass., and Amy Flaenor, a lawyer from Cleveland, Ohio.
Jennings yelled “Jeopardy!” I introduced the first batch of categories! Round, which included a special nod to the newly released “Wicked” movie.
The film’s stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ario, introduced the category to the contestants before the project’s director, Jon M. Cho, read the response in a pre-recorded video message: “Before I direct ‘Wicked.’ Kari, I could imagine it on the big screen.”
“And now, we invite audiences to step into the magical world of Oz to enjoy this nine-character experience.”
Clawson was the first to take a stab at the clue, guessing “Wonderful” – which consists of nine letters and will allude to the famous catchphrase “Wonderful Wizard of Oz” from the musical, book and film.
Unfortunately, Jennings said that was the wrong answer though. what Technically compliant with the standard.
Lonergan chimed in next and said: “What is immersive?” – which was the correct answer.
Fans took to the internet to express their confusion over the category and their frustration at the host not accepting specific answers.
“I’m tired of these incredibly vague categories only to put something like a movie. Really unfair to contestants who aren’t technically wrong,” one person wrote, while another fan added: Said, “Is it just me or is that not a pun at all? What makes Paul’s guess about ‘wonderful’ (as in ‘wonderful wizard’) wrong?”
He added: “What would be wrong about a “cinema” in my house?
Rounding out the comments, one user said, “Would cinema have been accepted? I wasn’t entirely sure what they were for.”
One viewer said it was “wickedly annoying” of Jennings not to accept Clawson’s answer, which he believed would have made “more sense” than the winning answer.
Heading into the final stake, the tax analyst had $21,200, far ahead of Lonergan’s $8,000 and Flenor’s $6,800.
The category was “American Women” and contestants placed their bets.
“In 1900 he said to a Mr. Dobson, ‘Get out of the way. I don’t want to attack you, but I’m going to break this base of evil,'” Jennings read.
“Who was Carrie Nation?” The right question was, only Lonergan was buzzing on the right. His total increased to $15,999, but he didn’t earn enough to overtake Clawson’s strategy.
He risked just $1, dropping the two-day total to $36,300 to $21,099.
“Wicked” is in theaters now.
