Hull City kept their Championship play-off hopes alive as they defeated Coventry City in an emphatic five-goal show stopper.
But Sunday’s beaten FA Cup finalists had themselves largely to blame as their very own hopes of a second trip to Wembley in successive months ended with three soft goals.
The Sky Blues gifted Jayden Philogen’s first-half opener in addition to Hull’s substitute Noah Ohio’s 78th-minute winner with their first touch – while they were also on the improper end of a controversial penalty.
The Sky Blues equalized twice, first through Casey Palmer’s superb free-kick after which through Bobby Thomas’ header, but Thomas’ underhit backpass allowed Ohio to hit the winner just two minutes after coming off the bench. Get the Tigers back to inside three points within the sixth. Norwich City kept.
And that leaves Coventry nine points adrift with three games remaining, a worse goal difference than Norwich – and needing snookers.
After Sunday Heartbreaking drama for the Sky Blues at WembleyThe game all the time threatened to be an actual mental challenge for the hosts.
It took just over half an hour for the sport to come to life when keeper Collins made a large number with Flogne hitting a low right-footed shot hard – and over his body for Hull’s Thirty first-minute opener. Allowed to burn down.
Palmer equalized just five minutes later when he curled home an excellent right-footed free-kick into the highest left corner. But, on the stroke of half-time, Hull were back in front.
Joel Latibeaudiere was adjudged to have brought down Liam Delap, but video replays showed the moment of contact got here just outside the penalty area.
Carvalho was completely unfazed as he coolly dispatched a right-footed penalty. But Hill’s celebrations lit up the Sky Blue touch paper – and led to massive brawls between 21 of the 22 players, leading to 4 bookings.
City boss Mark Robbins a minimum of had the choice of fielding two of his top goal-scoring targetmen, Haji Wright and Alice Sims, at half-time. And, on 58 minutes, the hosts were level when Thomas got on the top of Jay DeSilva’s cross to head home a second equaliser.
But after Thomas found himself at the opposite end, selling his keeper short with an unfair backpass, Collins was slow to respond as Ohio continued to rating. And, although they tried to placed on a bit of drama, the 25,000 fans had no puffs left after Wembley and couldn’t lift them – and the exhausted hosts really had nothing left to give. .
