Cole Palmer scored in the a hundredth and a hundred and first minutes as Chelsea secured an epic and extraordinary 4-3 victory over Manchester United.
Man Utd led the match after 99 minutes and 17 seconds – the last time a team had ever led in a losing Premier League match. It was also the second time in lower than a week that Man Utd lost the lead in stoppage time.
Erik ten Hag’s men now have just three days to recuperate from a devastating defeat before taking over fierce rivals Liverpool in Super Sunday, live online
“We had the match in our hands and we gave it away,” Bruno Fernandes said. “It’s frustrating. It’s hard to bear.
“It’s a crucial match [on Sunday against Liverpool]. I haven’t got to say anything [to his team-mates]. If I actually have to say something, it’s a problem since it’s a huge club.
In a remarkable match that might add to the long list of Premier League thrillers this season, Chelsea scored the primary goal through Conor Gallagher (4).
Palmer (19) doubled the lead shortly thereafter. Antony’s clumsy foul brought down Marc Cucurella and the previous Manchester City striker scored his seventh penalty of the season.
But as has often been the case with Chelsea this season, they allowed the lead to crumble. A terrible mistake by Moises Caicedo allowed Alejandro Garnacho (34) to undergo first, before Fernandes (39) equalized with a free header.
It was a moment of quality from Man Utd that allowed them to take the lead for the primary time. Antony’s sensational curling ball was headed in by Garnacho (67) in front of the delighted visiting fans.
But because the clock struck the eighth minute of added time – the minimum set by the fourth referee – Chelsea were awarded one other penalty after Diogo Dalot’s foul on Noni Madueke. This was confirmed after a thrilling VAR review and just one player could have made it, with Palmer scoring in almost an identical fashion to his first penalty (110).
There was still time for one more as Chelsea overcame a Man Utd defense that had already lost Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans – Varane’s substitute – to injury. Palmer’s curling shot deflected off Scott McTominay to complete his hat-trick and seal a euphoric victory for the Blues.
As a result, Man Utd stays in sixth place, nine points behind fifth-placed Tottenham. Chelsea will move up to tenth in the highest half of the table.
How Chelsea stunned Man Utd in an epic Premier League match
Chelsea began the match higher and were leading 2-0 after 20 minutes. In the primary minute, Malo Gusto’s cross deflected off Varane after which hit the unmarked Gallagher. Then, a beautiful strike from the Chelsea captain passed through the hands of Andre Onana.
The Blues were awarded a penalty after a clumsy foul by Antony, who bailed out Cucurella. It was Palmer who waited for Onana to concede before hitting the fitting corner for his seventh penalty of the season.
But as now we have seen too repeatedly this season, Chelsea let the lead slip easily and it was a terrible error by Caicedo that allowed Garnacho to equalize. His easy pass was easily received by the Man Utd winger, after which he passed Djorde Petrovic with a nice finish.
Five minutes later, Man Utd equalized. It was a wonderful ball from Dalot on the fitting, with Fernandes waiting towards the back post – unmarked – to head home.
The second half began fresh with Chelsea and Man Utd continuing to placed on a show for us. However, it was the hosts who made a stunning change in the 67th minute.
United hit the Blues after a good break and Antony delivered a sensational cross to playmaker Garnacho. Under pressure, the winger’s header over Petrovic was deflected and Axel Disasi’s pass hit the online.
But much more drama awaited them when Chelsea received a penalty in the 98th minute. A sliding Dalot beat Madueke after VAR intervened after referee Jarred Gillet pointed to the spot. Ultimately the goal was awarded and Palmer once more sent Onana the unsuitable way to secure what appeared to be a point for the Blues.
However, with a minute left in the match, Chelsea threw every thing at Man Utd and it paid off. The ever-dangerous Palmer picked up the ball on the left side of the box and his curling effort was deflected onto McTominay to send Stamford Bridge into a state of enjoyment.
Pochettino: This is a game now we have to win
Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino: “It was amazing. We deserved it, we were the higher team. It was a fair result. If you may see every thing, we began the match in control and we made a mistake. We felt it emotionally.
“In the second half we controlled the game again. We suffered in transition. We should be better in situations like this.
“In the end, it was a fair result. This is an important day for contact with fans. This should be a turning point.
“We kept believing and kept telling the players there was two minutes left and we still believed we could score. This was really important to us. A match that must be won.
“We are here to train. Today’s football is entertainment and spectacle. Scoring goals and building passion.
“The team needs to translate this to the fans. The way we started today is exactly how we wanted it to be, whether it’s Man Utd or Burnley.
“I like scoring goals, but I don’t like conceding goals like today. But it’s a process.”
Ten Hag: The player must make the right decisions
Man United manager Eric the Hag: “What frustrates me most is that we started the match poorly, making individual mistakes. But I had the feeling that we dominated.
“We came back into the game, playing some phenomenal football at times. Then you had to stop and start. We failed.
“I don’t know the reason. I know you have to do your job. They have to make the right decisions.
“We have to make better decisions. You saw us score goals on counter-attacks, and today you saw how much of a threat we can pose. But we have to read the game and know when to keep the ball.”
