On the rooftop terrace of Marseille’s Cité Radieuse, a brisk, unexpected wind blew on the evening of May 2, bringing with it some fresh energy for Chanel’s 2024/2025 Cruise Collection. While last year brought a youthful, bubblegum pop essence—complete with leg warmers and pink sweatshirt outfits—this season is more adventurous by the seaside. Perhaps it’s the influence of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics that grabbed creative director Virginie Wired (the Games’ sailing events will take place in Marseille Marina). Whatever the source, the sky-high presentation seems to have been a testament to the city’s status as the “beating heart of the Mediterranean” as well as a water sports destination that attracts legions of travelers from around the world.
Most of Marseille’s water culture was worded with a sea-inspired color palette, patterns and textures. The crochet skirt is set in shades of gray, teal, and yellow similar to what one would see on the ocean floor. Flowing silk dresses — in floor-sweeping and thigh-grazing mini iterations — feature a whimsical fish print. Gold chain fishing net-like necklaces and belts hang around necks and hips alike, adorned with symbols of sea life, including crabs, anchors and pearls.

A stylish take on the city’s watersports culture came via terrycloth flip-flops and rubber ballet flats, described by Wired as “scuba tuxedo” footwear. The interview with Vogue. The latter were a constant presence in the collection – hinting at imminent virality – paired with everything from bow-bedecked wetsuits to modern-like shift dresses. Speaking of clothing, the sleeveless hooded cotton mens reads playful and casual, especially when the patchwork is sprinkled with rosettes on the front pockets and neckline. Even the classic Chanel tweed suit got a sporty makeover, with models layering zip-up hoodies under their signature set or hot pants under their oversized knit blazers, as if for an early morning dip in the ocean. Later going out for garden food.
The easy luxury of the Mediterranean lifestyle was captured in a wave of flowing white eyelet dresses, dark denim sets and straw porkpie hats. Otherwise simple silhouettes were instantly made glamorous with layered pearl necklaces and 3D florals along the necklines and sleeves.
