Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ario discussed Glinda and Elphaba’s sexuality and their characters’ relationship.
In an interview with the UK publication, the actresses were asked about their thoughts on fans being romantically attached to their characters.
“I think Elfie, wherever the wind goes,” said Ariyo. “I think she loves Glinda. I think she loves love. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection they have. They have a real relationship. It’s true love. Yeah, maybe that’s why people are sending it, you know? Because what they create with each other is an unbreakable bond and love.
Grande echoed her co-star’s sentiments, adding that she has “confidence and truth.”
He continued, “Just that safe space for each other, which all relationships should be, whether it’s romantic or platonic. Glinda might be in the closet a little bit. You never know. Give her a little more time. I mean It’s just a true love, and I think it’s more like a deep security within each other and that’s why [fans] Maybe send it.”
Singer is not the only one who thinks this way. Kristin Chenoweth, who portrayed the Good Witch opposite Adena Menzel’s Elphaba on Broadway, agreed. “I thought way back when,” he commented on an Instagram post. Grande saying that she felt Glinda. There was “little in the closet.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Grammy winner and Oscar nominee also reflects on the Land of Oz and his thoughts in general.
“Emerald City has a pride parade every day, right?” Grande said. “Even chickens… those chickens are gay.”
He also noted that Peter Dinklage’s Dr. Delamond, professor of goat history at Cheys University, is a “gay icon,” with his bod cardigan and custom tea set.
