Andra Day will join Disney’s season two as Athena, the network announced Sunday.
Days Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, is the mother of Annabeth Chase (played by Leah Sawa Jeffries) in Rick Riordan’s hugely popular teen book series.
“I can’t wait to bring it to life and work with such a talented cast,” Day said in a video statement after Disney announced the news. “You all stay tuned for this epic journey.”
Day is the latest in a series of casting updates that Disney has released regarding the upcoming season two. Jeffries Walker will return as Annabeth, along with Scoble (the titular Percy), Erin Simhadri (Grover), Charlie Bushnell (Luke) and Dyer Gudjohn (Clarice). New cast member Daniel Dimmer will play Tyson the Cyclops in season two. Tamara Smart will play Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal and Margaret Cho will also guest star as the Gray Sisters.
Season two, slated for release in 2025, is based on Riordan’s second book in the series. Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood a year after the events of season one to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a bicycle for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and the camp is under siege by Kronos’ forces. Percy’s journey to make things right takes him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits him.
