Why did we pick it up?
Wix is one of the most popular website builders because it offers something for everyone. You can use the free plan to build a website, but you’ll be on a domain and have Wix display ads. The lowest-priced plan is a bit limited, but you have access to many free apps to enhance your site’s functionality.
Peter Garcia Letts, a member of our advisory board, shared his experience with the platform: “Wix has great tools for creating visually appealing and creative web layouts. I love that it allows you to design web The only downside is that integrating third-party tools with your Wix website is not that easy (and sometimes not even possible).
General features
I used Wix a long time ago and as I remember, I liked the simplicity of its site editor. The dashboard and site editor have changed a bit since then, so it felt like I was a new user all over again. In fact, it took me a while to realize the button I needed to press to get to the website editor, which was in the upper right corner, didn’t feel intuitive to me. But to be fair, I had previous experience and my expectations were wrong.
Wix now uses sections to help you design a website, which can be either helpful or annoying. Adding sections is as easy as choosing a section category, such as Welcome Message, and then selecting a section style. Then, you drag and drop it into a bounded area and fill in your content. A separate box with settings opens where you can adjust the font, text size and effects in the text box, for example.
There’s a point during setup where you can choose the type of website you’re building (portfolio, blog, restaurant, online store, etc.) and a prompt tells you what to do with your dashboard. Will tailor your website to your goals. I changed my portfolio from blog to restaurant and nothing changed.
A new feature for Wix is an AI generator for designs. I tested the welcome message for a restaurant site (medieval cuisine). I added some keynotes that should have been added and the AI kind of corrected it, although the image it chose made zero sense and the text was a little weird, so I had to adjust both. There was a need. I don’t think I’ll use it in the future because it doesn’t save me much time, but as it improves over time, it could be a helpful tool.
Wix’s offerings are mediocre and I was a little disappointed, but maybe my expectations were too high. I still think Wix is a great option for restaurants to build their websites, but there was no section specifically for creating menus, which was surprising. I had to build it from scratch.
I think one of my favorite features is the AI image generator built into Wix’s site editor. I specified the type of image I wanted and it created exactly what I needed. I would argue that the image generator is better than the text generator. The only thing I don’t like (and this is probably due to the snap-to-grid style of Wix’s site editor) is that I can’t position anything where I want, like slightly left of center.
Additional
Wix offers many additional features that many of its competitors do not. In fact, I’d say Wix is probably the best option for restaurants and hotels that need a website because it includes features specific to this type of business. As for the standard extras I usually look for in a website builder, Wix offers almost all of them. I can easily add meta descriptions and titles and all paid plans include built-in email marketing.
The only thing that disappointed me was that I couldn’t change themes and keep my content. Honestly, I expected Wix to change this feature to keep up with competitors that allow you to change website templates at any time.
Pricing
There are a few things I appreciate about Wix’s pricing plans. First, Website Builder offers a free plan, which is great for trying out the builder to see if it’s what you want. Second, the pricing is reasonable because the low-cost plan includes a free domain name, lead capture forms, and email marketing features for the first year.
While I would never opt for the Business Elite plan, I appreciate that Wix includes so many features for development, e-commerce, data management and custom reporting tools. However, it is $159 per month (billed annually), which is expensive for the industry.
fame
Wix fares well in user and reviewer ratings: the lowest I got was a 3.7 and the highest was a 4.9 (out of five stars). Personally, I’m a fan of Wix and its support. I had no problem contacting an agent when I needed help figuring out how to connect my domain (which is an easy process, but I need to check with support).
Standout feature
Wix offers one of the largest template libraries for a website builder. There are over 900 designer-made templates. Not all of them are winners—some look too dated—but most are modern and suitable for multiple industries.
Who should use it?
Wix is a great option for new small business owners, especially those who want to try running an online store. While e-commerce plans may seem expensive, Wix’s plans are comparable to competitors.
